Which data type exists on an arbitrary numerical scale where the exact value has no significance beyond ranking?

Ordinal data

This data type is all about order without meaningful gaps. When data are ordinal, the labels convey which item ranks higher or lower, but the distance between adjacent labels isn’t assumed to be equal or meaningful. You can say that one item is above another, but you can’t quantify how much higher. That makes it ideal for things like rankings, Likert-style survey responses, or finish positions in a race, where the exact numbers are just a way to order items.

Nominal data, by contrast, uses categories with no inherent order at all; interval data requires meaningful, equal intervals between values so you can measure differences and averages; and percentile-related descriptions express position within a distribution rather than providing a simple ordered scale.
